Through phase two of the ALiVE (Action for life skills and values) Project implemented in East Africa, with members of Values and Life Skills (VALi) Thematic cluster of Regional Education Leaning Initiative (RELI) are implementing parental engagement, the Sazani Trust NGO from Zanzibar has conducted 20 parent engagement meetings on life skills and values in two districts of Urban and Northern A, Unguja.
Speaking after the meeting with parents, teachers, religious leaders, youth, and shehas (the village Government leaders) in Tumbatu Gomani Shehia, the Director of Sazani Trust, Mrs. Safia Mkubwa Abdalla stated, “Sazani is implementing the ALive Project where in each district have included ten Shehias and ten Schools including Primary and Secondary, to spread knowledge of teaching children life skills, where parents and community members themselves are involved in discussing and finding the best way of imparting and nurturing the children life skills and C.
“We are providing life skills through parents and teachers’ forum, and community members whom we are building the capacity of improving and nurturing the life skills to understand and teach to their children by partnering with religious leaders, teachers, and our students whom we have already built the capacity for life skills through our projects,” added Safia.
Juma Omar Juma, a parent living in the Tumbatu Jongowe Shehia, was interviewed on the topic of life skills and values (ethics) he said, “I thank the Sazani Trust organization for coming here to provide us with this life skills education, and what I see is that life skills are important for a child because they prepare the child for what to do in his current and future life.”
Juma Omar added, “The methods that should be used to teach our children life skills are to bring them together in the household and explain this matter to them so that they are on the right track,”
However, when interviewed in Dar es Salaam, the ALiVE Manager Zanzibar and Technical advisor Mainland from the Milele Zanzibar Foundation (Non-Government Organization), Ramdhani Matimbwa, explained, “We, as the creators of this Project, strongly advise parents to take their place, prepare their children, teach children life skills, and teach children from a young age how to solve their problems, cooperate with their peers, communicate, and be creative.”
In the Urban District, the Shehia that were involved are, Mapinduzi, Miti Ulaya, Jang’ombe, Mtoni, Mnazi Mmoja, Kisiwandui, Mwembe Shauri, Kibweni, Rahaleo, and Urusi Shehia, while in the Northern District A are, Nungwi Shehia, Tumbatu Gomani, Tumbatu Jongowe, Fukuchani, Kidoti, Kinyasini, Mkokotoni, Mkwajuni, Kigunda, and Tazari Shehia.
Sazani Trust has selected almost 30 members from each shehia (including parents, teachers, school committee, and religious leaders for each Shehia who will lead the teaching of 21st-century life skills in their shehias.
