Bicycle riders known as Daladala in Geita region have requested the Police force’s road safety unit to take action against Bodaboda (Motorcycle riders) and Bajaji drivers who harass them on the Road by causing frequent accidents.

The request was made by the group of young people through their statement read in front of Geita District Commissioner Hashim Komba and Geita Region Daladala Chairman Michael Sospeter, where the statement noted that Daladala are often harassed and assaulted by Bajaji and boda boda drivers.

“We request the Police Force to help us provide road safety education to bodabodas and bajajis, for example, many Bajajis make a lot of U-turns and hit daladalas, these often cause accidents on the road” stated, Michael Sospeter the Chairman of Daladala Geita Region

Explaining the issue, the Head of the Geita District Road Safety Team ASP Lazaro Masembo said that the challenge exists and promised to continue providing them with road safety education while urging the cyclists to ensure that their bicycles have lights if they want to do night transportation activities.

“Our challenge is daladalas and we ride our bicycles at night, how will other road users see us when we do not have lights, instead we are starting to see bajajis and bodabodas as naughty, my brothers, I ask you to install alarms, install reflectors known as Rubodo and install lights on our bicycles” said, ASP Lazaro Masembo – DTO Geita

Geita District Commissioner Hashim Komba speaking to the youth has asked the Geita Municipal Council to set up a system to lend bicycles to the youth.

If this young man uses a bicycle worth two hundred and seventy thousand and returns 3500 shillings every day until he comes to get the bicycle as his own, he will have spent more than four hundred and fifty thousand through President Samia’s funds. I wish to see these youth buy bicycles for us and start returning 750 shillings per day instead of 3500 shillings” Hashim Komba – Geita District Commissioner

And the Geita District Community Development Officer Zengo Pole has asked the youth to form groups so that the president can give them a loan.

“A group is defined as having at least five people who can form a group and get a loan, use this opportunity well to get a loan from President Samia” Zengo Pole Geita District Development Officer.
