East Africa Community.

Kenyan President William Ruto has been officially elected as the Chairman of the East African Community (EAC) taking over from Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit who has completed his term.

The decision was announced at the 24th Summit of Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC) in Arusha, on November 30, 2024.

It will be remembered that Salva Kiir was announced to take up the position on November 24, 2023, at the same Summit which also approved the accession of Somalia to the (EAC) and become the eighth Member State of the Community.

After being elected Ruto, he wrote on the X “Trade remains a key engine for economic growth and regional integration. On account of this, we must address internal barriers to intra-East African Community (EAC) trade. We must eliminate non-tariff barriers, enhance infrastructure connectivity and foster regulatory harmonisation. This will create a seamless trading environment, driving our competitiveness and economic growth.

The meeting was held in Arusha, the headquarters of the (EAC), marking 25 years since its re-establishment after its collapse.

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, also participated in the meeting, where she wrote on her X page, “As it is 25 years since the re-establishment of this important Community for the development of our countries, I have explained one of the works we are doing to improve the living conditions of our citizens through the energy sector.”

“I have urged my fellow leaders to join our voices together and to collaborate with the private sector in ensuring affordable and reliable access to clean cooking energy for our citizens. This step is part of the good work in improving their living conditions, and building a foundation for environmental protection, which is essential for the well-being of our community for current and future generations” concluded President Samia
