The South African Cabinet has approved the release of several nationally owned land, the Ndifuna Ukwazi Movement has said.
According to a Press Release issued today by Ndifuna Ukwazi the People’s Land Campaign launched in 2023 has brought some success.
PRESS STATEMENT: 15 NOVEMBER 2024 by NDIFUNA UKWAZI
In August 2023, Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU), together with its sister organizations, social movements, and communities nationwide, launched the People’s Land Campaign. Communities in the Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces were part of this campaign that aims to address South Africa’s urgent need for equitable land distribution.
The People’s Land Campaign utilized the State Land Disposal Act of 1961, which allows the President to empower the Ministers of Human Settlements and Public Works to sell, lease, or donate state-owned land.
Since launching the campaign, NU has collaborated with the Housing Development Agency to fast-track the release of land for housing. To date, the Cabinet has approved the release of several nationally owned land.
The minister of human settlements is behind this initiative and has encouraged her counterparts in public works, WCPG, and CoCT to support the return of land to people’s hands. Umhlaba ezandleni zabantu – there is still much to be done and we will support applicant communities. Urban land reform and redistribution in our lifetime! The statement was concluded.
It should be noted that in South Africa the issue of land ownership is a long-term challenge, where most of the land is owned by settlers.
