Usangu Valley and Zanzibar to benefit from the Rice Project

In finding the solutions to the impact of climate change caused by human activities, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Tanzania coordinated a preparatory work session to develop a Project for the development of food systems in the southern highlands areas of the Usangu Valley along with the islands of Zanzibar. The project has already been allocated 8.4 million US dollars for the financing of the World Environment Fund (GEF – 8).

FAO official from Tanzania Kuena Morebostsane also added “The project is about changing the way we produce food, which does not lead to the pollution of our environment, which will not cause the destruction of forests, loss of Biodiversity, which actually contributes to food security and nutrition, we can withstand the change of climate as well as contributing to the economic activities of the Community. The project is funded by the World Environment Fund, which has allocated 8.4 US dollars. We, as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, are very happy to collaborate with the Government of Tanzania in this important work”.

Assistant Director of the Department of Environment Vice President office, Union and Environment, Thomas Chali, he called to consider the elimination of the causes of the effects of climate change through agricultural activities through the Project.

Jonathan Sawaya is an expert on environmental issues and climate change from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), he explained that the meeting involved the Office of the Vice President for Union and Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock Zanzibar.

A rice farmer for more than 40 years from the Usangu Valley in Ubaruku Village, Rujewa Mbarali Distrct, said they are grateful for the project to be implemented in the Usangu Valley where they will ensure that they add value so that they can benefit more from Agriculture.

The project aims to stimulate sustainable agriculture and reduce the use of industrial Fertilizers said, Ali Basha from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock in Zanzibar.
